Determining Animal Well-Being
The evaluation of a farm animal’s well-being poses a challenge to the animal food industry and scientific communities. There is a bid among scientists to come up with a reliable means of measuring an animal’s state of comfort and well being. Studies would include placing animals in different environmental conditions in varying temperature, humidity, amount of daylight, bedding, size and shape of living quarters and the number of other animals in the environment.
Work is also underway towards understanding animal reactions to behaviorally and biologically stressful situations such as in transport or when restrained. Understanding these issues will enhance the food animal industry and guide handlers towards the appropriate technology to be used.
