Genetic Engineering of Crops

The genetic engineering of plants and animals is relatively a novel technology that is bound to have a giant and intractable environmental challenge albeit unknowingly. Products of this technology have already invaded our grocery stores and kitchen pantries. Some of the most important staple food crops have been fundamentally altered and consumers are not being informed about it.

Thousands of plants, animals and insects are being produced by taking the genetic material of one organism and inserting it into the permanent genetic code of another and these are being done at a very alarming rate. Studies reveal that genetically engineered food can pose serious risks to humans, domesticated animals, wildlife and the environment. Widespread use of genetic engineering in agriculture can only lead to uncontrolled biological pollution that will threaten many microbial, plant and animal species to extinction.

One Response to “Genetic Engineering of Crops”

  1. Another major drawback is the patented nature of GM crops. Private companies look only for profit. They also monopolise the market and would make the farmers dependent on them.

By the way we have discussed the importance of genetic engineering in plants, in the post Organic Farming + Genetic Engineering = The New Organic?
